The House of Seven Gables as a Gothic Novel Essay -- House of the Seve
The House of Seven Gables as a Gothic Novel à à à à à To be a paradigm of a Gothic novel, The House of Seven Gables needs to include many elements, all which center on the ideas of gloom, horror, and mystery. The action of a Gothic novel takes place in a "run-down, abandoned or occupied, mansion or castle," which often include secret passages, doors, and compartments (Encarta). The mansion also adds its own flavor and variety to the atmosphere of mystery and suspense in the novel by providing a dark and gloomy setting where the story takes place. The basis of mystery and suspense in the atmosphere of the novel feeds off of "an unexplained or supernatural event" in the present or from past generations (Harris). The unexplained event in the novel is a result of ancient prophecy in connection with the history of the mansion, or the earlier generations, and explains the negative vicissitude in future present generations. The ancient prophecy sometimes only provides the reader with "partial or confusing" informa tion or only provides one side of the story, thus presenting and even stronger feeling of mystery in the novel (Harris). Bad omens and visions of death also occur to foreshadow the misfortune of a character in the novel in the near future. The use of omens as foreshadowing devices also develops and presents additional suspense to the already mysterious plot. Along with omens, supernatural events also appear in a Gothic novel to add mystery and include: "ghosts, giants, or inanimate objects coming to life" (Harris). The supernatural events continue to add the atmosphere of suspense and even horror to the Gothic novel. In a Gothic novel, a "tyrannical male" usually threatens a weak female, adding an elemen... ...n and fulfills the last criteria in presenting the House of Seven Gables as a Gothic novel. à The use of the elements of mystery, suspense, and horror in the House of Seven Gables creates the atmosphere common to a Gothic novel. The use of the supernatural and other mysterious events, in the House of Seven Gables, also compose the elements present in Gothic Literature. By presenting the elements through the setting and plot, The House of Seven Gables contains all requirements of a Gothic novel, claiming its spot in dark halls of the Gothic literature genre. à Works Cited "Gothic Literature." Colin Stremlau Arntz English 9th 3rd period December 17, 2013 Abortion ââ¬â Why Itââ¬â¢s Wrong ââ¬Å"The greatest destroyer of peace is abortion because if a mother can kill her own child, what is left for me to kill you and you to kill me? There is nothing in between.â⬠-Mother Teresa Have you ever realized how precious life is? Have you ever wondered what it would be like if you were never born? Some babies don't get to experience life because of abortion. Abortion isn't an ethical way for abandoning a baby nor is it fair to our community, its killing innocent people. Several babies have died from abortion and more will continue to do so because people support the pro-choice movement. Pro-choice isn't ethical because it's against religion, morality, and can be emotionally damaging. Abortion doesn't benefit the baby or the woman. Some people believe that life starts after birth, but it doesn't. All unborn babies are people; we must realize this and stop murdering defenseless babies. Abortion is a selfish act and it occurs very often. There are other solutions and it's ver...

Empathy Answer
Answer and discuss briefly the following questions: 1 . The Filipino people are considered as one of the most hospitable citizens In the world- polite, friendly and honest character- but It's mind boggling and Intriguing that whenever one is put into power (given high authority or position, for example in the government), that person becomes easily Influenced and corrupted by the system transforming such person Into a malevolent leader? Reflect on this thought, and explain briefly why this occurs.Sometimes It's because of pride, compromise and organizational culture. I asked my boss about this, fist he told me that It depends to the administrative where the person gets In. In local government some people who was given higher position act and decide to make something wicked because of the word ââ¬Å"compromise and craving for power and more money'. I remember the day when the higher position (office head) on one office in LOGIC gets vacant: the head of the said administration automat ically filled the sit.On the 4th day of his service, the whole office gets shocked and created a commotion because of the memorandum he released saying that effective on that day, all division head, unit heads and budget officers were terminated with the reason of they are no longer effective in their firm. (That office is not a permanent office or department; majority of the staff are contractual and can be terminated easily). After a week, the whole staff found out that the new head of the office gave some of the vacant position and salary of those he terminated to his supporters (also a staff of that office-they are area coordinators and a driver). They believed that he did it on purpose. Example: so the funds of that office can be easily manipulated. 2. Given the status quo of the Philippines politics and society, we observed through he news how our government is slowly deteriorating due to the corrupt officials that are now involved and even convicted In crimes, particularly the controversial ââ¬Å"Pork Barrel Scamâ⬠. Based from the character of these Politicians/ Government officials In our country that we elect, what kind of leaders are they?Do they embody the ââ¬Å"Ideal leaderâ⬠that's why we elect them? What can you say about the ââ¬Å"Intellectual Judging capacityâ⬠of the Filipinos on why we have elected these government leaders In the first place? At first, the time politicians' campaign during election period, the people TLD know If they are telling the truth. Some were true to themselves and willing to serve and give his/her best effort and knowledge for the benefit of his/her countrymen (those behind even though they are known as a good politicians. The common alibi for someone who was not able to fulfill his or her promise is that ââ¬Å"promises are made to be brokenâ⬠. Or, is this the favorite responses of politicians who make a lot of promises even do they know too well that they will not be able to fulfill such promise s just to win. Election fever is now in the air in the Philippines. The people will be selecting a new president, vice president, senators, and all provincial and local officials. For local officials who will be elected, they will be serving for a term of three (3) years. There's a saying that ââ¬Å"The moment this child encounters these other beings, the influences upon the individual beginsâ⬠. Even if they are not a good leader because of their weaknesses, I could say that they also have capacity to ran and implement the peace and order in the country. The eyes, ears, feelings of other politicians are always open to defend people from their evil doings. But, the process gets slow because the root of all evil things is in a greater higher position and trying to manipulate the situations.

Supply Chain Drivers
Logistics Drivers Facilities These are physical locations where merchandise is stored, assembled or manufactured. Two major types of facilities are production sites and storage sites. Decisions regarding the role, location, capacity, and flexibility of facilities have a significant impact on the supply chainââ¬â¢s performance. Facilities related metrics include; capacity, utilisation, cycle time of production, cycle time, flow time efficiency, product variety, processing/setup/down/idle time, average production batch size, and production service level.Inventory This includes all unprocessed material, raw materials being processed and completed merchandise. Change in inventory policies can alter the supply chain performance. For instance, a stationery shop can be responsive by stocking large amounts of stationery and satisfy customer demand from stock. However, a large inventory increases costs, rendering it less efficient. Stock reduction would make it more efficient but less resp onsive.Inventory related metrics include; average inventory, products with more than a specified number of days of inventory, average replenishment batch size, average safety inventory, seasonal inventory, fill rate, and fraction of time out of stock. Transportation Transportation involves moving inventory from one supply chain location to another. Transportation can take form with different combination of modes and routes, each with its own performance characteristic.Transportation related metrics include; average inbound and outbound transportation cost, average incoming and outbound shipment size, average inbound and outbound transportation cost per shipment and fraction transported by mode. ? Cross-Functional drivers Information This consists of data and analysis concerning all other drivers, that is, facilities, inventory, transportation, pricing and customers. It is arguably the biggest supply chain driver as it directly affects each of the other drivers. Timely and accurate in formation will enhance coordination and better decision making. Information related metrics include; forecast horizon, frequency of update, forecast error, seasonal factors, variance from plan, and ratio of demand variability to order variability. SourcingSourcing involves choosing partners to perform a particular supply chain activity such as production, transportation, storage, or management of information. This decision variable establishes functions that a company may undertake and those that it may outsource. Sourcing related metrics include; days payable outstanding, average purchase date, range of purchase price, average purchase quantity, fraction on-time deliveries, supply quality, and supply lead time.Pricing Pricing determines the amount a company will charge for goods and services offers in the supply chain. Pricing affects the behaviour of the customer buying a product or accessing a service, thus affecting supply chain performance. Pricing related metrics include; prof it margin , days sales outstanding, incremental fixed cost per order, incremental variable cost per unit, average sale price, average order size, range of sale price, and range of periodic sales.

Charlotte Brontes Jane Eyre :: Bronte Jane Eyre
The situation when Jane in locked in the Red Room occurs because she has retaliated against John Reed hitting her and the fact that she is being punished for doing so. The mere fact that she is being locked in the Red Room can already accumulate sympathy within the reader because she is seemingly being very unfairly punished whereas her cousin John has attacked her already and managed to escape any punishment whatsoever. However in the events leading up to being locked in the room, the reader could not feel sympathy for Jane Eyre as she did in a way bring the punishment upon herself for attacking Mr. Reed in the first place. If she has not retaliated she would have not been locked in the room. Most readers however probably do feel sympathy for her as she was acting more in self-defence. She was also unfairly spoken too as they were dragging her to the room itself as they say things like Ãâshe's like a mad cat' and do not seem to be letting her give an explanation at all for her ac tions, and only listening to what John had too say. They make sure that she knows her place by telling her that ÃâYou are under obligation to Mrs. Reed' and that she is Ãâless than a servant'. These are not kind words and the reader will probably feel sympathetic as she is being treated as a worthless object. The room that she is sent too is a dark and unpleasant place with memories of the dead Mr. Reed. For a child of Jane's young age it would seemingly be very distressing for her, and with the added experience of her seemingly seeing a Ãâghost' of some kind, it would be a terrible experience. Even if the reader has not felt sympathy for Jane before this incident they would surely feel so now, as she is in a distressing situation alone. When Jane first screams out for help from someone it does seem as though people are coming too help her as Bessie and Abbot come to open the door and ask her what is wrong and what has made her cry for help.
