CPW is right around the corner guys, excited? I am, probably more than you realize (ooooo, cryptic). Burton-Conner has all of its activities planned, our new shirts just got here (3 boxes containing several hundred shirts are sitting in my room), and Ive begun to realize that my classes are being toned down so that we can enjoy CPW. This is all very good news and puts me in a good mood, even though Im studying physics right now. Last year there was an 8.02 (Physics, EM) test during CPW, meaning any host in 8.02 just completely ignored their prefrosh for the first day of CPW so they could study. Luckily our test is this coming Thursday this year, completely avoiding CPW. My next math test isnt until late April, Toy Design doesnt have tests, and UROP is just fun. Overall, Im in really good shape to enjoy CPW . . . well . . . I thought I was. Then I checked my 2.001 schedule and almost cried like a baby. My last 2.001 (Mechanics and Materials) test went over like a bag of rocks. Technically, I guess its called a Quiz, but they just call it that to lure us into a false sense of security. I ended up getting class average, but it certainly didnt feel like that while taking the test. I felt worse coming out of that quiz than any test Id ever taken. I spotted the admissions crew (Ben, Nance, and Stu) in the student center after the test and had a What am I doing here, I suck at MIT, Im going to fail, I hate life, tell me that Ill be ok! moment. At some of the schools, students are allowed to take a couple of IB classes without being enrolled in the full IB curriculum (ask your local IB school’s IB coordinator if this is permitted, find their contact information in our article Complete List of IB Schools in the USA, by State). As an IB Diploma Recipient, I'll discuss what it entails to complete the full IB curriculum and receive your IB Diploma. What Are the Main Components of the IB Diploma Programme Curriculum? There are two main components of the IB Curriculum: the class requirements and the core. The Class Requirements: To earn an IB diploma, you have to take courses from six subjects, one each from groups 1-5, and either one from group 6 or a substitute from one of the other groups. Group 1: Language A: literature, Language A: language and literature, and Literature and performance. Group 2: Classical languages, Language B, and Language ab initio Group 3: Business management, Economics, Geography, History, Information technology in a global society, Philosophy, Psychology, Social and cultural anthropology, World religions, and Global Politics Group 4: Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Design Technology, Environmental systems and societies, Physics, and Sports, exercise and health science Group 5: Mathematical Studies SL (known as Math Studies), Mathematics SL, Mathematics HL, and Further Mathematics HL Group 6: Dance, Film, Music, Theatre, and Visual Arts For a full list of courses from each group with descriptions, check out our article on The Complete List of IB Courses and Classes. You must take at least 3 at a higher level (study 250 hours instead of 150 hours). Each class culminates in an exam. IB tests are graded on a scale of 1-7 with a 4 considered passing. The Core To complete your diploma programme, you also need to complete what is known as the core in addition to the class requirements above. The core consists of 3 components: a class known as Theory of Knowledge, an essay known as the Extended Essay, and a project known as Creativity, Action, Service. Theory of Knowledge/TOK: This is a class that is a mix of philosophy, and IB says that the class "encourage[s] students to reflect on the huge cultural shifts worldwide around the digital revolution and the information economy." This class makes you think about what is important to you and think about big world issues. I LOVED this class! I think your teacher is critical to enjoying the class, and Mr. Fresco, you are the best! For the class, there is no exam. Instead, you write a paper and give an oral presentation. You can take it online through Pamoja Education. Extended Essay/EE: A 4,000-word mini-thesis. You choose a topic that needs to be approved by IB (which is not very difficult). You get an advisor (an IB teacher preferably at your school, although you can also get access to one at another school through the Pamoja Education). Write about something you enjoy because you will be spending a lot of time on it. I loved British theatre and ended up writing mine about a revolution in post-WWII British theatre. #theatrenerd. I really encourage anyone who pursues an IB Diploma to take the Extended Essay seriously. I ended up receiving a full-tuition merit scholarship to USC’s School of Dramatic Arts program, and in my interview for the scholarship, I spoke passionately about my Extended Essay. I genuinely think my Extended Essay helped me get my scholarship. Creativity, Action, Service/CAS: A three-part project that forces you to get involved in extracurricular activities. Creativity, getting involved in something creative, learning an instrument, acting in a play, writing a short story, etc. As long as you can argue it is creative (since you have to do a report), you can use it as your creativity part. I acted in a few plays, which counted for my creativity hours. Action: Generally sports-related activity, sports in a wide sense (could be anything outdoorsy like rock-climbing or hiking). I played on my school’s varsity tennis team and that counted for my activity hours. Service: Think of this as traditional community service, you can volunteer to feed the homeless, host a fundraiser for brain cancer research, host a drive to collect prom dresses for Becca’s Closet, etc. Are Those All the Requirements to Get Your IB Diploma? No, you also need to hit certain score markers on your exams in order to get the diploma. You must score 24 points or more between all of your IB exams to get a diploma. If you score 24 points or more, you will receive your diploma if: All CAS requirements have been met. There is no "N" awarded for theory of knowledge, the extended essay, or a contributing subject. There is no grade E awarded for theory of knowledge and/or the extended essay. There is no grade 1 in any subject/level. There are no more than two grade 2s awarded (SL or HL). There are no more than three grade 3s or below awarded (SL or HL). Overall, there are no more than three grades 3 or below. At least 12 points have been gained on higher level subjects (for candidates who register for four higher level subjects, the three highest grades count). At least 9 points have been gained on standard level subjects (candidates who register for two standard level subjects must gain at least 5 points at standard level). The final award committee has not given the candidate a penalty for academic misconduct. How Difficult Is It to Meet These Standards? Well, the international IB Diploma Rate (The Diploma Rate is determined by the percentage of the students who receive IB diplomas out of those who were diploma candidates) is only 80%. So, about 20% of students, who complete the IB Curriculum outlined above, do NOT receive an IB Diploma. Also, the IB Diploma Rate varies drastically between schools (some have 95% diploma rates while others have less than 5% diploma rates), so I recommend contacting the IB school you are considering attending to find out their specific diploma rate. It is crucial that we, as a society, come to a deep understanding and awareness of this message. For that reason, I will state it again: Rape is devastating to its victims. Thirty percent of rape victims will contemplate suicide. Slightly more will seek therapy. Slightly less will invest in some form of self-defense. The overwhelming majority, 82%, will tell you that their lives have been permanently changed. The way they view men will be permanently changed as well (Warshaw 66). Forty-one percent of victims go through life believing every day that they will be raped again (Warshaw 64). Therefore, it is of the utmost importance that we do what we can to spread knowledge of this crime, protect its victims, prosecute its perpetrators, and prevent it from ever happening again. ANALYSIS OF THE MUSIC OF FANTASTIC MR. FOX INTRODUCTION Mr. and Mrs. Fox (George Clooney and Meryl Streep) have an idyllic home life with their son Ash (Jason Schwartzman) and his young nephew Kristofferson who is visiting. But after twelve years of quiet domesticity, the bucolic existence proves too much for the animal instincts of Mr. Fox. Very soon returns to his old life as a chicken thief from evil farmers (Boggs, Bunce and Bean), endangering not only his family but the entire animal community, which eventually unite to fight against farmers determined to capture the audacious Mr.Fox. In the end, he uses his animal instincts to save his family and friends. The story is based on the famous novel by Roald Dahl, author of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The film is directed by Wes Anderson director known for directing films such as The Royal Tenembauns, The Life Aquatic, The Darjeeling Limited. He has been nominated for best animated film and best soundtrack at the Oscars, Golde n Globes and BAFTA awards.The original music is by French composer Alexandre Desplat who has composed music for films, including: New Moon, Coco Before Chanel, The Golden Compass, The Queen, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I, among many others. ANALYSIS OF MUSIC Start The first thing you hear is a small piece of music that puts us in the context of what the film will be shown as the introductory part of the movie where this also occurs it is the book in which the story is based .We will be located in the field by the instruments we hear mainly a banjo. In some of them the composer'sFrench influence becomes ev ident in songs such as â€Å"Street Fighting Man† by the Rolling Stones, â€Å"Une Petite Ile† and â€Å"La nuit americaine† by French composer George Delerue. Boggis, Bunce and Bean Mr. Fox looks out the window of the tree you intend to purchase and three farms currency, listen to a short snippet of melody that later accompany the owners of those farms, moving the camera for each of the farms the tune changes quickly main instrument, depending on the farm. Later when the Badger describes to Mr.Fox physical personality and the three farmers it is here when we have the complete melody with a steady rhythm marked by ukulele, blue and some other instruments but the melody voice changes, always a different wind instrument according to the characteristics of character, for example: a tuba for Boggis that is chubby and eats twelve chickens a day, some variation of flute that sounds almost ridiculous and is for Bunce which is ridiculously tiny, and for Bean who is the leader and the most danger is, a trumpet (or saxophone).So the timbre changes to accentuate the personality of these characters. From here every three characters appear hear this melody with variations in timbre, rhythm and harmonies depending on the case, for example if it is a hunt, hear drums and trumpets we heard when we see a battle, such as those where the Fox lays out a plan later. The Music changed to a more forward when the plan is carried out, to narrate the action. The interesting thing about this part is that the music is interrupted constantly to accentuate some funny dialogue or action that works perfectly without disturbing the viewer.There is a change in tone rhythm and melody in the middle and at the end when the situation has eased a bit, the music is much more country like adding trumpet and possibly accelerated noting that the plan has to hurry. This melody of battle was heard later in different robberies that take place. Master Plan Phase 2 Is the farm theft Bunce, who absentmindedly see a magazine, while listening to music on his headphones and eat a donut. Behind him we see all the action happens on TVs connected to security cameras.It may well be nothing of music , but the fact that the Music, classical instrumental melody, is heard through headphones Farmer theft makes everything simpler and easier, like comic. The game of Whack-bat The music you hear in the game background and clearly this is used to narrate the action is happening. The melody is the same we hear the squirrel in the move, only this one has a different timbre and harmonies we hear brass instruments and the snare, the bands typical sports games. Master Plan Phase 3Theft Bean's farm is a little more tricky because Rat watching this place. The music we hear in this part is the melody of the Rat that accentuates your personality and with guitars, drums, Jew's harp, tambourines, whistles, wooden flutes, etc.. to create a western atmosphere as for the duel between Mr. Fox and the Rat. This melody apparatus appears near the end when the rat turns to face Mr. Fox but in dying tone changes to a more melancholy with the ever-present blue and some string instruments. Song to Boggis, B unce and BeanIt is that same melody as the song becomes a Boggis, Bunce and Bean sung by human children of the place with a creepy but funny rhyme to describe the malevolent farmers and is used in the final showdown between animals and farmers, their harmonies higher tones reveal what you know is obvious: in the end the animals get away with it. The end Near the end, when animals were victorious, and the battle ended (for now) listen to The Beach Boys again, we hear not only the beginning but in the middle with the song â€Å"I get arround† when given encouragement to his animal friends giving their positions and Latin names, and now with â€Å"Ol ‘man river†.Then when Mr. Fox gives the final toast Kristofersen hear the theme actually for my Ash theme because we hear when leaving Ash, and we listened to the beginning when Mr. Fox is proud of and will be fox and what he has done, so we know that Ash will be (and was) like his father. And finally the movie ends wit h the monkeys dancing in the supermarket and the song â€Å"Let her dance† Bobby Fuller Four with a style similar to The Beach Boys as this type of music seems to be representing the personality and style of Mr. Fox.
